The New Conservation Areas in the Philippines Project (NewCAPP) is a project implemented nationally by DENR together with key local stakeholders such as LGUs and NGOs. PBCFI is assisting Polillo Island Biodiversity Conservation Foundation, Inc. in the implementation of this project for the Polillo group of islands.
Over-all Purpose: The United Nations Development Programme – Global Environment Facility (UNDP-GEF) provided a grant to the DENR-PAWB for the implementation of a five-year New Conservation Areas in the Philippines Project (NewCAPP). The overall objective of this project is to expand and strengthen the terrestrial protected areas system in the Philippines through development of new conservation models and building capacity for effective management of the system, which shall be supported by improved systemic and institutional capacities.
In the implementation of this initiative, the DENR-PAWB enlisted the participation of different organizations to carry out the three major project outcomes in nine sites across the country. These outcomes are the following:
- Expansion and diversification of protected areas system in the Philippines, which will fill bio-geographic gaps and improve the overall coverage and connectivity of the current system
- Capacity and institutional strengthening for the terrestrial protected areas system to coordinate and harmonize management of the existing system and new conservation areas; and
- Capacity and institutional strengthening to improve the cost effectiveness of protected area financing.
By virtue of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with PAWB, the PBCFI acts as the Local Responsible Partner (LRP) in the implementation of NewCAPP in Polillo Group of Islands. The Polillo Islands Biodiversity Conservation Foundation is the Local Implementing Partner (LIP) of PBCFI in delivering project outcomes in the area.
